Shree 420 (1955)

Wearing torn Japanese shoes, English trousers, a red Russian cap, and a Hindustani heart, orphaned Ranbir Raj comes to Bombay to make his fortune. He pawns his gold medal, gambles with the money, loses everything, & the balance is pick-pocketed. He ends up on the beach, meets with Vidya Shastri, a teacher who runs a private school, and both fall in love. Ranbir gets a job in a laundry. When he goes to deliver some clothes to Maya, she notices that he has a way with cards, gets him to accompany her to a casino of sorts, where he wins Rs.20000/-, which unfortunately is pocketed by Maya. Then a rich industrialist, Sonanand Dharmachand, approaches Ranbir, hires him to work for him, and soon Ranbir is on his way to a wealthy life. Vidya gets a first hand look at this wealthy life, and decides to break up with him. Sonachand teaches Ranbir that in order to make money one must never discriminate between the rich and poor. So they set out to offer homes to the homeless for Rs.100/-. Watch what happens when Ranbir finds out that Sonachand has been setting him up to be the fall guy

Awaara (1951)

Raju lives as a derelict as a result of being estranged from his bitter father, a district judge, who threw Raju's mother out of the house years ago. Raju shacks up with a Dacoit (pickpocket bandit) as his surrogate father only to realize that the man is actually responsible for the original misunderstanding between his parents. Raju kills him, and then tries killing his father, but fails, is arrested, and is taken to court right before his very own father, who presides there as the Judge. Raju has his childhood girlfriend as his legal representative, and the onus is now on his father, who must pass judgment without showing any personal sentiment.

Jan Pahchan (1950)

Asha lives a poor lifestyle in a village in India along with her mom and blind dad. When her mom passes away, her dad re-marries another woman, Rukmini, who is cruel and abusive toward Asha as well as makes her do all the work - indoors and out. Rukmini would like Asha to get married to a semi-senile villager, Lallu, an engagement date is fixed but is subsequently postponed as the date was deemed inauspicious. Shortly thereafter the entire village is agog with the news that Asha is pregnant. A man named Jeevan comes forward to claim her as his bride and she moves in with him. Little do the villagers and Asha parents' know that Asha has been intimate with an attractive and wealthy artist by the name of Anil. But since Anil has met with an accident, he is disfigured, possibly for life, and knowing that Asha will dump him as he is not attractive anymore, decides not to return. How long will Asha continue to live with Jeevan, and what will be the outcome of her child?

Andaz (1949)

Nina is the rich and spoiled daughter of a rich businessman. One day while horse-riding she loses control of her horse and is rescued by a young man named Dilip. Dilip instantly takes a liking to her and starts to frequently visit her house where he entertains her with his singing along with Nina's friend Sheela. Nina's father dislikes this and tries to make Nina realize that spending so much time with Dilip is not wise as Dilip could misunderstand her friendship with him for love. On the day of Sheela's birthday party, Dilip realizes he has fallen in love with Nina and tries to tell her. However tragedy strikes when Nina's father dies of a heart attack that same day and this leaves Nina devastated. Dilip comforts her and tries to reveal his true feelings for her but is shocked by the arrival of Nina's fiancé Rajan who has returned from London. Dilip is shocked that Nina never mentioned that she was already engaged and in love with Rajan. Rajan and Nina eventually get married and Dilip shocks Nina when he finally reveals his true feelings for Nina on the same day of the wedding. Nina is shocked by Dilip's revelation as she only thinks of him as a good friend. This revelation causes strain in Rajan and Nina's marriage as Rajan starts to suspect whether Nina could be having an affair with Dilip and notices that Nina is acting very distant towards Dilip since the day of their wedding.

Humayun (1945)

Badshah Babar arrives in India from Iran, drives out Ibrahim Lodhi, makes peace with the Hindus and rules Delhi. He also adopts Rajkumari as his daughter and treats like his very own child, even though he has two sons, Humayun and Kamran, and a daughter, Gulbadan. Babar also finds out that Rajkumari is soon to be married to Randhir, the Rajkumar of Chanderi, who is out to avenge the conquest of his native land, by killing Humayun. Before that could happen Humayun falls seriously ill, Babar prays for his survival, but himself becomes ill and passes away, leaving Humayun to recuperate and be crowned the next Badshah. Humayun meets Hamida Bano and both fall in love with each other so much so that he loses all interest in the running of the state. When Delhi is attacked by Jai Singh, Kamran and Khan Bahadur join in the attack, forcing Hamida to flee. Humayun fends off the attackers, but must re-route his armies when Rajkumari is taken hostage. He does manage to rescue her, make amends with Randhir, but loses Delhi to his opponents, and flees to his native Iran. This is where he will meet and marry Hamida, and both will become parents of Shahenshah of all Shahenshah's, Jalaludin Akbar. But before that Humayun must take back his kingdom, and in order to do this he must first take Kabul, then Lahore, and then Agra and finally, if he manages to survive, Delhi.

Aag (1948)

Even during his school days, Kewal Khanna had always been attracted to the theater, especially the one about Bilwa Mangal and Chintamani, and all he wanted to do was open his very own theatrical company and play Bilwa, while his childhood sweetheart, Nimmi, would play Chintamani. He did attempt to do so, but on the day of the play, Nimmi and her parents moved away from Lakhsmanpur. When Kewal grew up, he attended college, meets fellow collegian Nirmala Devi, who was not his Nimmi, but he decides to call her as such and asks her to enact the role of Chintamani, to which she agrees. On the day of the play, she gets married and had to re-locate. Heartbroken again, but not disheartened, Kewal's obsession gets him in trouble with his Advocate father, who wants him to continue in the family tradition and become an Advocate as well, leading to Kewal leaving the residence. He travels to Bombay, locates the Royal Opera House and meets with it's owner, Rajan, and together they create 'Kewal Theatre'. Kewal even finds a girl of unknown parentage and name, re-names her Nimmi, and both fall in love with each other. Kewal returns home to invite his parents to the opening show, but it was during the play that he finds out that Rajan loves Nimmi. He asks Nimmi to forget him and accept Raja as her life-partner, but she refuses. So he takes the drastic task of setting the theater on fire, as well as setting afire the left side of his face, leaving him horribly disfigured. He does succeed, the theater is destroyed, his face disfigured, and results in Nimmi screaming in horror at his disfigurement. Nimmi and he part ways, leaving Kewal to continue on to his heartbroken journey of finding his lost love, the real Nimmi, who, if found, may not have anything to do with him, especially in his present condition.
