NEWS 17 MAY 2008

Since May 16, 2008 the refugees are being sent back to their own villages except in cases where their own villages were severely damaged.

Due to the changing policy we have needed to change our approach so that we are able to focus more on villages rather than the refugee camps. There are about 50 villages near Pyapon which are beginning to receive refugees. Yesterday we began delivery of food and food preparation packages (listed below) to every household. Our objective is to cover 50 villages in the next 7 days. In order to accomplish this objective, we are sending 15 NAG groups (each consisting of 2 aid workers) to the villages everyday to deliver our food and food preparation packages.

Food packages:

  1. Rice
  2. Cooking oil
  3. Potatoes
  4. Chilis
  5. Jerry cans*
  6. Cooking pots
  7. 4m x 6m plastic sheets*

*These non food items can be used for water containers and storage

In addition to this, we have also opened 6 permanent clinics in Pyapon and are sending two mobile clinic teams (each consisting of 2 female doctors) to other villages in the Pyapon area. There is a permanent nurse in each clinic. Medicine has been provided by individual donors and our current stock is estimated to last 2 weeks.

We have also decided to provide additional support to aid in the village rehabilitation. This is in the form of cash for work; especially in the rebuilding of shelters. The cash for work concept will generate desperately needed income for the villagers as well as to help rebuild their shelters in a timely fashion.

Currently we are operating in 50 villages in the Pyapon Township but we have had requests to help in about 50 other villages in the nearby Bogalay Township. Our current budget will be enough to operate for about two months in our original 50 villages but we will need a larger budget in order to expand our operation to other townships. Other townships will include Bogalay, Laputta, and Daydaye.

We are in the process of submitting a new, precise budget which will include food and food preparation packages as well as rehabilitation costs for 50 more villages.

Thank you in advance,

Nay Win Maung: Project Coordinator, Nargis Action Group Myanmar.
